NEWPORT BEACH FESTIVAL

It has been an honour to be the custodians of Sydney's longest running community festival for the last 14 years, and would like to thank everyone involved in putting on such an amazing event, but, as they say, all good things come to an end.

The Newport Chamber of Commerce formed in 1972 and started the Market Day when a group of local shop keepers brainstormed the idea of putting on a suburb wide day of shopping and entertainment.

The event transformed into what is known to locals as "Market Day",
an iconic event on the Greater Sydney's calendar.

Everyone from Newport and the surrounding area have fond memories of Market Day from over the decades, from seeing quintessential local music from Celibate Rifles and much missed front man Damien Lovelock, to Angus and Julia Stone, James Morrison and Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) , to the lesser
known local bands and musicians who performed over the years.

Reminiscing on house parties back in the day, after the Market Day wrapped up for the evening, fireworks displays to giant water slides, as well as a discovering a unique piece of clothing, or the perfect gift at the Market Day sales in the local shops and market stalls, every local has a story from Market Day's past.

The Newport Chamber of Commerce experienced significant setbacks, under the pressures of the pandemic and has recently been reinvigorated by a new group of passionate shop keepers, the new management of the business group want to focus on more local business specific events and didn't see the massive end of year Market Day in their vision of promoting the local businesses of Newport, they are planning more smaller scale events throughout the year.

...
the iconic Newport Market Day event will live on in the hearts of locals.
